When fate bounds two creatures together

Anima: Gate of Memories is perfect for fans of action RPGs and Japanese art, with a unique gameplay twist that sets it apart from the crowd. Not only does this third person game have a gripping storyline which follows two beings bound together by destiny and more, but it expresses that through a dual character control system that lets you switch characters on the fly for some amazing combo attacks.

A JRPG extravaganza with a twist

The first thing that players of Anima: Gate of Memories will notice is the art style, cell-shaded for the most part. The game is a quintessential JRPG in appearance, from the hair and outfits to the bold colors and particle effects. The game supports all this flash and excitement with some surprising additions, such as side-on scenes, some gloomy and grand settings resembling Dark Souls and a strong storyline. The game follows two main characters, known as The Bearer and Ergo Mundus, in a quest that explores an open world, giving the player plenty of choice. Switching between the two is a major mechanic in this game and one of its unique features.

Fast, furious and fluid fighting!

The Japanese art style in this indie game is mirrored in the character animations, which are fast moving and exaggerated, letting you leap into the air, swing enormous weaponry and do battle with impossible creatures. What’s not to love? You get a sensation of free-flowing, fast-paced action which is important in action RPGs and forms part of the game’s character. In fact, the characters themselves are interesting and a big plus-point. The Bearer is a twenty-year-old girl who fights nightmares for a secret society, while Ergo Mundus is an immortal being summoned by The Bearer to destroy evil, but with a dark history of his own. The story is delivered in visual novel scenes with text, which can take some reading but are worth sticking with, because the interplay between these characters in the plot complements their interplay in combat. During a fight you can hot-switch between the two main characters, which not only helps you to avoid getting bored with a certain fighting style, but also lets you combine the two. For example, The Bearer will line up some powerful magical attacks that stagger the foe, so that Ergo Mundus can switch in and tear them apart with visceral claw attacks.

Unleash hell on this gripping journey

The great thing about Anima: Gate of Memories is that while it is a humble indie game, or rather it’s from a smaller studio, it delivers a lot of content. You get a solid storyline with some real twists and turns, some lovingly drawn locations and characters, plus an interesting combat mechanic. No two fights are quite the same, yet it’s also very easy to learn, so it doesn’t feel like a gimmick. This game gives you a lot of bang for your buck and is full of surprises.
